What is an IP rating?
In waterproof rating, IP stands for Ingress Protection, which is commonly used to describe the ability of an electronic device or product to resist dust and water in a given environment. The IP rating consists of a two-part number in the format IPXX.
-The first number (X) indicates the dust protection rating, which ranges from 0 to 6, with higher numbers indicating greater dust protection.
-The second number (X) indicates the waterproof rating, ranging from 0 to 9, with larger numbers indicating greater water resistance.
Specific meaning of each numerical rating
The specific meanings of the dust protection ratings are as follows:
0: No protection
1: Protected against solid objects larger than 50mm (e.g. fingers)
2: Protected against solid objects larger than 12mm (e.g. tools, thick lines)
3: Protected against solid objects larger than 2.5mm (e.g. wires)
4: Prevents entry of solid objects larger than 1mm (e.g. screws, nails)
5: Completely prevents entry of dust (dustproof)
6: Completely prevent the entry of dust and can withstand a long period of high temperature environment (dustproof and closed)
The specific meanings of the waterproof rating are as follows:
0: No protection
1: Protected against vertical dripping
2: Protected against dripping water within 15° of inclination
3: Protected against splashing water
4: Protection against splashing water
5: Protection against water jets
6: Protected against strong water currents
7: Waterproof immersion to a depth of 1 meter
8: Watertight immersion to a depth of more than 1 meter (maximum depth and time usually specified by the manufacturer)
What is the difference between IP65, IP67 and IP68?
As common IP ratings, the difference between IP65, IP67 and IP68 is not really that big, but you still need to pay attention to the details of these gaps in use, so as to avoid unsuitable environments that make the product's life expectancy shrink.
IP65: Dustproof and waterproof spray, able to withstand water spray from any direction, but can not be immersed for a long time.
IP67: Fully dustproof, able to withstand short-term immersion in water (up to 10 minutes).
IP68: Fully dustproof and able to withstand prolonged immersion to a depth of 3 meters.
What IP Rating Will You Need?
Low IP ratings are suitable for:
-Indoor use
-Inside sealed products
-Inside sealed signs
-Devices with aluminum enclosures
High IP rating is suitable for:
-Unenclosed locations exposed to the outdoors
-Areas with high levels of dust and debris
-Highly trafficked areas
-Areas with frequent water splashes
-Areas where people are in frequent contact
-Humid environments
