Today, we’ll be diving into the details of high bay lighting, commonly referred to as warehouse lights. These lights are widely used in large spaces with high ceilings, such as gyms, sports complexes, warehouses, auto garages, manufacturing plants, and auditoriums. High bay lighting is specifically designed for spaces with ceilings over 14 feet high, while anything below that is typically considered low bay lighting.
With advancements in LED technology, modern led ufo high bay lights have become smaller and lighter, offering a high lumen output of over 140 lumens per watt. This efficiency not only saves significant energy costs but also reduces maintenance expenses, as LED high bay lighting have a long lifespan and don’t require frequent bulb replacements. Additionally, modern high bay lighting usually do not have reflectors, eliminating the loss of lumens that occurs when light passes through reflectors.
Options for High Bay Lighting
The two most common types of high bay lighting are led UFO high bay lights and led linear lights. As the name suggests, UFO high bay lighting are named for their flying saucer-like appearance, while linear lights are more suitable for aisle lighting. Depending on the specific application, floodlights or wall lights may also be used.
If you are retrofitting an existing high bay lighting system and wish to keep your current fixtures, you might consider using a corn bulb as a replacement. However, it’s crucial to remove the ballasts when making this switch.
Color Temperature and Installation Methods
When choosing led high bay lighting, color temperature is an important factor to consider. The most common color temperature is 5000K, which produces a bright white light similar to natural daylight and is suitable for most applications. Other available color temperatures include 4000K and 3000K. However, we recommend avoiding color temperatures above 5000K (such as 5700K or 6500K), as these have been advised against by the American Medical Association.
LED UFO High bay lights offer various installation methods. For example, UFO lights typically come with an eye bolt for mounting with chains or cables. Linear lights often use gripper wires, and floodlights can be mounted using flood brackets.
Dimming Features and Sensors
Most led ufo high bay lights come with dimming capabilities. Dimming allows you to adjust the brightness according to your needs, helping to save energy by reducing power consumption. Dimming features can also be paired with motion sensors. For instance, in a warehouse, you can set the lights to dim when the area is unoccupied and return to full brightness when someone enters, enhancing both security and energy efficiency.
Beam Angles and Lens Options
The LED UFO high bay lights typically have a 120-degree beam angle, which is suitable for installations below 25 feet. For installations higher than 25 feet, you may need to choose a 90-degree or 60-degree beam angle to ensure the light is focused on the desired area. Additionally, different lens materials, such as glass or polycarbonate, can be selected based on the environment.
For industries like food processing, where hygiene is critical, we also offer NSF-certified lights to ensure safety and compliance.
Lighting Design and Planning
Finally, when designing lighting for a warehouse or other large space, several factors need to be considered. Traditional lights like 400-watt metal halide or high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs can typically be replaced with 150-watt high bay lighting. However, metal halide bulbs degrade much faster than LEDs, so over time, the LED UFO high bay light will provide comparable or even superior brightness.
When planning your high bay lighting, consider the installation height and spacing of the lights. As the height increases, you’ll need brighter lights, but fewer of them. Conversely, with lower heights, you can use lights with lower power output, but you’ll need more fixtures to ensure even lighting. We recommend considering crossover lighting to avoid shadows, which is particularly important in a work environment.
