Warehouse lighting is critical to improving efficiency, safety, and accuracy, yet it's often overlooked. Next we'll explore how to set up a good warehouse lighting system by calculating the right warehouse lumens.
Factors affecting the lumens needed for warehouse lighting
There are two main influencing factors:
Size of the warehouse.
The first thing we need to consider is the size of the warehouse, the size of the warehouse determines the distribution of lumens, but also for the back of the lumen calculation to lay the foundation for the measurement of the length and width of the warehouse and multiply to get a more accurate size of the warehouse area.
Ceiling Height
The height of the ceiling determines how high the lumen output of the fixture is needed to adequately illuminate the room, and a higher ceiling height requires a higher lumen output fixture.
Calculating Lumens for Warehouse Lighting
After measuring and calculating the area of the warehouse, the area of the warehouse is obtained and the lumens required can be calculated using the following formula:
Lumens = Area (sq. ft.) x Feet Required (candelas)
For basic lumen recommendations per square foot of warehouse, also known as footcandles, here are the specific criteria for footcandles:
-For warehouses that handle larger items, the ideal lumen requirement is approximately 10 lumens per square foot
-For warehouses that store and handle smaller items, the figure should be approximately 30 lumens per square foot.
-For aisles, the recommended lumen requirement is 20 lumens per square foot.
If a warehouse is 30ft x 40ft, then the area is 1,200 square feet and the required light level for this warehouse is 10 footcandles, which is calculated by the following formula:
1200 square feet x 10 footcandles = 12,000 lumens
So that means this 1200 square foot warehouse needs fixtures with a total output of 12,000 lumens.
After getting the number of lumens needed for the warehouse, you can choose the right fixtures accordingly.
LED fixtures are ideal for warehouse lighting because of their energy efficiency and high brightness. Not only do they provide powerful light output, they also offer significant energy savings, lower costs and reduced environmental impact. At the same time, LED warehouse lighting are durable and able to cope with harsh environmental conditions such as temperature fluctuations and vibration, which are common in warehouses.
JC-LGL offers a wide range of LED warehouse lighting specifically designed for warehouse environments, including High Bay LED Lights, Linear High Bay, and LED canopy Lights, as well as a specialized fixture count calculator that can be used if you are confused about the number of fixtures for your warehouse. We have also designed a special fixture quantity calculator so that if you have any questions about the layout of your led light for warehouse, you can use our tool to get the answers you need more quickly:
